Gideon had been hesitant about showing about at the Yule Feast that evening-- how was he to afford suitable dress robes? However, Marion really had insisted on his coming, so Gideon had decided he might as well take whatever he could get. So, he entered the Great Hall in a slightly threadbare, dark blue coat-- a hand-me-down from some relative or other. Beneath the coat he had a plain maroon wasitcoat and white cotten shirt. His legs were clad in jeans, however-- there had been nothing else, much to Gideon's embarrassment. However, it made his usual worn red sneakers less noticeable than if he'd been wearing breeches.
The Hufflepuff caught sight of the familiar black tophat that indicated Floof was with Marion, and hurried over to it. Marion was already in the company of Ayanna Windlew, and Sabbath appeared to be greeting him from a a few seats away. Hurriedly, Gideon sat himself down in the empty seat beside his friend.
"Hey, Marion," he sighed. Sitting beside the finely-dressed boy, Gideon felt especially plain, and a slight blush tinged his freckled cheeks. "You look nice," he told Aya kindly, noting that she, also, was dressed fancily. How embarrassing for him....
Suddenly, the tango started playing from nowhere, and Gideon's head jerked up sharply. Was that...Professor Alixcien?! The Hufflepuff stared, aghast, as the man danced the tango with a manakin. Quickly, Gideon averted his eyes. "This is awkward," he mumbled, keeping his light blue eyes trained on his folded napkin.
Just then, Floof turned into his rabbit form. Gideon watched the animal fondly-- yes, Floof could go on and ignore everything that was happening.... He didn't have to worry about dress robes and money and sneakers.... What a lucky creature.

Maura walked hesitantly into the Great Hall, gazing in admiration at all the beautiful dresses the other girls were wearing. And the boys looked so handsome as well in their tuxedoes and dress robes.... She hoped she wasn't too plain-- the dress was something her parents had bought her two years ago, and the girl hadn't really grown much since then. The gown was quite long, trailing slightly on the ground behind her as the Ravenclaw walked. It was from black velvet, embroidered with little golden bells. An emerald green sash went loosely around her thin waist, tied on the side in a bow. The sleeves hugged her arms and were made of the black cloth until an inch above her elbows, at which point it changed to gold-colored sheer. Maura was rather fond of it, and had worn it last year to Christmas dinner at home. The girl's long black hair was not in its usual pigtails-- instead, it went in a loose braid down her back and was tied with a thin red ribbon, to which were attatched little round bells. Her green eyes searched the Great Hall anxiously, trying to find Marlene or Ari-- alas, neither of them could be seen, so Maura just continued over to the Ravenclaw table. That's where she found Marlene, looking very pretty in a gorgeous, dark blue gown with her hair held back from her face with a hair piece Maura had never seen before. She seated herself quietly beside her friend. "I almost didn't recognize you," Maura said, smiling. "What a beautiful dress! I didn't see it back in the dormitory.... When did you get it?" She noted that Marlene was looking rather troubled, and Maura wondered when could possibly be putting her friend in this mood. Could it be the dress? Maura recalled the last time she had worn something strapless, and how bare she had felt. Or maybe she would've liked to have a book in her hands? Marlene was hardly seen anywhere without a good book nearby. ((I'll draw a piccie of her dress so it's easier to understand.... I never was much good at describing dress robes and gowns. ^^ )

Marion turned to Gideon as he sat, laughing cheerfully. "There you are! And here I thought I had taken too long getting ready!" He tilted his head slightly, reaching out to keep floof from hopping into a platter of gravy-covered dumplings of some sort. His eyes scanned Gideon slowly, from his waist up his arms to his face and back down again. Something wasn't right, and he closed his eyes and sighed softly.
"Gid, what's wrong? You aren't comfortable. What's up? You can tell me..." He released Floof, who had decided to hop over and inspect an orange dish that happened to be yams and not the carrots he was hoping for. The boy crossed his arms faintly, a concerned look on his face as he watched Gideon. He already knew that one of the professors was acting strangely, so that didn't even phase him. His friends words, however, did. "Awkward? What, that? Or something else?" He nudged a thumb to the professor dancing for tips as he spoke.

Gideon shrugged. "I just feel like a peasant that walked into a royal court or something," he explained, starting to feel a little more comfortable after reminding himself multiple times that he'd been amongst these students for five years, and they didn't care that he was practically dressed in rags.
The Hufflepuff raised his eyebrows at his friend. "What d'you mean, 'What, that'?!" He gestured dramatically with his hands. "When a professor starts doing the tango on the dinner table, it's looked upon as astonishing behavior!" He sighed. "This place is like...a circus." Gideon wasn't entirely sure what a circus was, but he'd heard a Muggle-born describe a strange occasion as such, and thought it sounded rather suitable.
"Well, enough of that," said the boy, who, after several minutes of being among his peers, was returning back to his usual self. Besides...he didn't want Marion worried on his behalf. "Are you going home for Christmas? You never told me." Gideon instantly began helping himself to various dishes on the table.

The boy couldn't help but laugh, tilting his head back and cupping his hand over his mouth. After a moment of snickers, his hand fell away and revealed his amused grin. "Nah, there isn't a single lion! And yea, it isn't normal, even here for a professor to dance on the tables, but if he is in the Christmas spirit, he can do what he likes. I think it's rather fun. But that's not what made you feel awkward anyway, so, yea..."
Marion put a reassuring hand on his friend's shoulder, his smile all but faded into nothingness as he looked at Gideon seriously. "You already know we don't care what you're wearing, and anyway, if you EVER want to dress up, just tell me." His eyes glinted mischieviously. "I've got some robes that would look divine on you." Was he teasing, or was he serious? Knowing Marion, it was probably a bit of both.
"I didn't?" Marion frowned thoughtfully for a moment, before shaking his head and returning to his usual smile. "Yea, I'm heading home. Remember, Cres still doesn't really know where I go during the year. I've got to come home and pretend to be 'normal' for the holidays. It's going to be nice to see her and Mom again, but I hate lying to her like that. I don't know how Barrett can handle it year after year." With a thoughtful look, Marion glanced down the table to see if he could spot his brother. When he did, he waved heartily and grinned. Even with the way his brother treats him, Marion still looks up to Barrett.
Barrett scowled slightly as his brother caught his attention. A white tuxedo? Just because they had the funds to clothe themselves didn't mean that Marion had the right to spend the money their mother sent so frivelously! Barrett only had one pair of dress robes, after all, and they were tasteful and discrete. Then again, it was probably his frugality that made it so easy for Marion to spend so much. And why was the boy's hand on that other one's shoulder? Humph. Scandelous. He shook his head and looked away, starting a conversation with the boy beside him about the Ministry of Magic.
((This probably sucks. And look, I actually remembered to post his BROTHER every now and again.))

((Don't be ridiculous. XP Your posts are lovely.))
"Ugh, I hate it when you've got that look on your face," Gideon laughed. "And when you put it that way, I'm quite happy like this." He reached for the cinammon sugar to dump on his buttered sweet potato.
Gideon sighed as best as one could through a mouthful of potato. He wouldn't necessarily be spending his holidays alone, since a number of students were sticking around for Christmas break, but things sure would be quiet.... The dormitory would be empty this year, except for Gideon, who didn't even have a choice in the matter of going home. Christmas would be even worse in the quiet home, without Christmas dinner.... Just himself and Fabian, really-- their mother might venture out of her room once, but would she even know it was Christmas?
Of course, Molly and Arthur had offered for the boys to spend Christmas at the Burrow, but...it would almost be like intruding. It wasn't as if Gideon and his brother-in-law didn't get along, but Molly was practically part of another family entirely by now. And he didn't like depending on the Weasleys, especially when they had so little money themselves.... Well, their case wasn't nearly as bad as the state the Prewetts were in, but Gideon and Fabian had politely turned down the offer.
"Well, say hello to your family for me," said the Hufflepuff, smiling now that he had swallowed down his food. Gideon hadn't met the Cuttings, but Marion obviously cared deeply for him family.

Aya blushed, and started watching the two Hufflepuffs banter back and forth. It was a lot more interesting than the dancing part. Aya couldn't truthfully remember why she came to the feast. I don't dance, I hate dressing up...Hmm...Good question. She thought, looking around to see who else was here.

The lightbulb turned on with a flicker, and Marion tried not to laugh at his own thought. Gideon was staying at school again this Christmas, wasn't he? Maybe he wouldn't have such a hard time at home if he actually had a friend with him. And Mom wouldn't mind, right? Well, that is, if Gideon and Fabian even wanted to go. "Hey Gid..." Marion had a glint in his eye, but this time it wasn't nearly as frightening. "What do you say to you and your brother visiting our place for Christmas? It's just going to be the four of us otherwise, and Cres is always asking me what my friends at school are like."
((Wow, short... beh... but the thought struck me and I said "FUN!"))

((DUDE! I award you the trophy for the most awesome idea ever! And if you want, I could attempt to nag Fran into helping with the project [though she's been kinda busy lately].))
Gideon opened his mouth in surprise, but quickly closed it. "Marion, I dunno," he said, turning slightly red. "Are you sure your mom would allow it? And we're just two more mouths to feed...." And then the Hufflepuff remembered, the Cuttings were practically the opposites of the Prewetts when it came to money. Marion's house was probably enormous....
It certainly sounded fun, and Gideon wanted to go. And it wasn't like Gideon was asking if he could spend Christmas with the Cuttings-- Marion was inviting him.... And best of all, he'd be with his friend, right?
"Well, who am I to turn down such a generous offer," laughed Gideon. "But really, are you sure? It won't be that bad here.... I usually spend Christmas at Hogwarts anyways.... I'm used to it."

His free hand waved impatiently in Gideon's face, brushing away the boy's concerns. "Mom won't mind that. It's a small price to pay, if we make it look like we're a 'normal' family and that I have 'normal' friends." He purses his lips at the thought, making a sour face that lasts only for a moment. With his other hand, he squeezes Gideon's shoulder. It would be a blast, and it would be so nice to be able to enjoy Christmas with some friends."
He patted Gideon's shoulder once before releasing his friend. "I'm sure! It'll give you a change of pace, anyway, and I can actually give you your present in PERSON this year." He chuckled and spun around to face Ayanna, his face lighting up. "Would you like to come, too? It'd be all sorts of fun!" He blinked a bit, realizing something, and flushed slightly. "You'd probably have to endure my mother's assumptions and my sister's teasings, though. I don't know if you'd want to..."

Gideon smiled. "I'll tell Fabian after the feast, though he might want to stay.... I think he has some friends in sixth year that'll be staying for the holidays as well." The Ravenclaw was rather popular, after all.... And he'd probably prefer to be among his own friends as opposed to his little brother's friends for Christmas.
"Well, won't that be something," the Hufflepuff laughed. "Just...nothing with too many feathers this year, okay?"
"Yes, Aya should come too!" Gideon cried cheerfully, his past troubles forgotten. He would feel much better if he was not the only guest at Marion's house, really. He laughed when Marion told the girl that she might be subject to teasing.
"I don't think she's the one that will fall victim," the boy commented. "Your mother and sister might focus on you instead." He grinned at Ayanna. "But really, you should come!"
In an altogether good mood, Gideon put a large piece of beef briscuit* in his mouth. The holidays this year would definitely be better than they had been in years!
* A reeeeally good dish I had with relatives in Texas. I'm unsure about the spelling though, so forgive me.

Aya giggled, then bit her lip as she thought. "Well, I was going to go home and check up on my Grampa who keeps trying to kill himself, not literally, just figuratively, but seems like he's doing fine and doesn't want me coming home. Makes me wanna cry!" Aya joked, pretending to cry. "But if I check it over with the oldies, I'm sure they'll say yes. And this time, I won't send a toliet seat home. I'll send the whole toliet. That is...If I find some way to detatch it..." Aya trailed off, thinking. "I don't think I'll be teased so much, once they get to know me. Should I tell them I beat up guys? I have a reputation for it, ya know!" She said, leaning back in her chair. She almost fell, but her reflexes were quick enough to grab the table before she fell. "And I thought I had learned the first thousand times not to lean back in my chair, oh well!"

((Ok Skimming time! I'm going to try to use all of my Reader Vocab here because....I have a test tomorrow.))
Esemerelda looked and laughed. "Men..." she needn't continue. "I think he's crazy, stupid, or just trying to get attention." She looked around and took a drink. The taut skin of the turkey in front of her, oddly did not quench her taste. She was intolerant of the heels on her foot and wanted to take them off badly. Her eyes looked at the benign look on Lazarus' face. How could he be so nice and...(well not calm)so well...just nice? How could he act like he didn't have a care in the world? Was he really once a death eater?
She thought of the mark that infused into her brain. She shuddered. that was her proof.

"You sent a toilet seat home last Christmas?" Gideon laughed, and immediately choked on the small bit of food left in his mouth. He coughed, then reached for his pumpkin juice and recovered in a moment. "Please, don't send Marion's toilet away, some of us need to use things like that...."
"You do?" Gideon asked, pretending to cower in fear in his seat. "Seriously, who have you 'beaten up'?" He took a thoughtful sip of pumkin juice. "And it's not that I doubt your strength or anything-- really, I feel sorry for your victims. If you managed torture just by threatening me with the horrors of feminine conversations, physical torture has got to be...scary."
Just then, Aya was leaning back in her chair, and nearly toppled backwards. "And I thought I had learned the first thousand times not to lean back in my chair, oh well!"
Gideon laughed, then dug heartily back into his food. Christmas was going to be fun this year.

((I liiiiiive and this is going to be short compared to what I can post ))
Dropping the usual look of black trousers with white doodles and the rest of his school attire (along with his tie wrapped tightly around his left wrist) Fabian Prewett walked, semi-confindently, into the Great Hall. His rusty brown hair in the same matter it always was and the stormy blue eyes looked over the people who were already at the feast. He saw his brother, Gideon, along with his friends, and a few Ravenclaw students sitting at the table. Tugging the sleeves down his arms, since they kept rolling up for some reason, which probably meant they were too small for him. The eldest of the brothers walked further into the hall.
Heading over to the Ravenclaw table, nodding a greeting to Maura and Marlene, both in their dress robes the 6th Year student sat back against the table. Letting his care-free gaze wash over the hall and everone in it, a slight smile playing on his lips at certain antics that caught his attention for a brief moment. Fabian's main objective this feast was to unwind a little and relax. Well, as best he could anyway.((I guess no RPing and depression leads to bad posts. ))
